| 5‑Lipoxygenase (5‑LO) is an enzyme that catalyzes the oxygenation of arachidonic acid to produce leukotrienes and other bioactive lipid mediators. It is a member of the lipoxygenase family and plays a key role in inflammatory responses. 5‑LO is overexpressed in various malignancies, particularly those with a strong inflammatory component. Overexpression of 5‑LO is often detected in tumor cells as well as in stromal cells (e.g., tumor-associated macrophages) within the tumor microenvironment. Elevated 5‑LO expression is frequently linked with increased tumor proliferation, enhanced angiogenesis, and higher metastatic potential—factors that often correlate with a poor prognosis. |
