| RELN - Reelin Abbreviation: RELN, Reelin Type: Secreted extracellular-matrix glycoprotein / neuronal signaling protein Function: Reelin binds ApoER2 and VLDLR and activates DAB1-dependent signaling. It regulates neuronal migration during development and, in the adult brain, supports synaptic plasticity, long-term potentiation, NMDA receptor function, cytoskeletal regulation, and memory. Alzheimer's Disease: ↕ Dysregulated / functionally impaired. Reelin signaling is disturbed in Alzheimer's disease. Reduced Reelin occurs in vulnerable brain regions and during earlier disease stages, while increased Reelin can occur later as a compensatory response despite impaired downstream signaling. Effective Reelin signaling can reduce pathological tau phosphorylation, influence APP processing, and support synaptic NMDA receptor function. Favorable Direction in Alzheimer's Disease: ↑ Effective RELN-Reelin signaling is generally favorable, even though measured Reelin protein abundance alone does not necessarily indicate effective pathway activity. |
