| HNF1A (Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor 1 Alpha) is also known as HNF1 homeobox A. The term "homeobox" refers to a specific DNA sequence that encodes a protein domain known as the homeodomain, which is involved in regulating gene expression during development. HNF1A is a transcription factor that plays a crucial role in the regulation of genes involved in glucose metabolism, liver function, and pancreatic development. While HNF1A is primarily known for its role in diabetes and metabolic disorders, there is emerging evidence suggesting that it may also be involved in cancer biology. HNF1A may act as a tumor suppressor in certain types of cancer, particularly in liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma). Loss of HNF1A expression has been associated with poor prognosis in these cases. |
