Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is a peptide hormone produced physiologically by the pituitary that stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete cortisol. Cortisol then feeds back to suppress ACTH.
Very high ACTH/cortisol → severe metabolic derangements (hypokalemia, infections, muscle wasting)
