| H3K4 refers to the lysine-4 residue on histone H3 and, in practice, to its methylation states (H3K4me1, H3K4me2, H3K4me3). These are among the most important epigenetic marks in cancer, because they define which genes are transcriptionally competent. H3K4 is an epigenetic “gatekeeper of expression.” Cancer exploits H3K4 methylation to keep growth and survival genes accessible, while metabolic stress (e.g., methionine restriction) selectively destabilizes this system. It is not simply “up” or “down” — it is repatterned. |
