Definition: Airway smooth-muscle contraction is shortening of bronchial smooth-muscle cells that reduces airway diameter and produces bronchoconstriction.

Asthma relevance: Excessive or hyperresponsive airway smooth-muscle contraction is a major functional mechanism underlying reversible airway obstruction in asthma. It is directly opposed by β2-adrenergic bronchodilators.
