| Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is an enzyme located in the frontal cortex of the brain that metabolizes epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Genetic polymorphisms in the COMT gene can influence enzyme activity and may be associated with the risk of certain cancers. COMT is involved in the metabolism of estrogens, particularly catechol estrogens, which can have both proliferative and genotoxic effects on breast tissue. Dysregulation of estrogen metabolism has been implicated in the development of hormone-related cancers. |
